TEN HOPES FOR LEG TWO

by Mockingbird Foundation Contributor Chris Glushko

A few weeks ago, I took a look back at leg one and ranked all 20 second sets from worst to first. In addition, Charlie Dirksen also took a fantastic deep dive into the first half of summer. Now that we’ve all had some time to over-analyze leg one in painstaking detail, it’s time to get our Phish nerd on for leg two. With seemingly anything and everything on the table this Summer, what could/should the band do to take it up another level?

As always, if you enjoy this piece or other content on phish.net, please consider donating to The Mockingbird Foundation, where more than 98% of the money raised is given directly to music education programs. Now on to the list -

1) “Izabella
Last played in 1998 for the tenth and final time, many wondered if the band had forgotten that this explosive Hendrix cover was once a powerful part of Phish’s arsenal. Then on July 3 in Jones Beach, Trey played the famous lick during “Sand,” prompting fans to speculate “Izabella’s” appearance before summer’s end.

2) “Bathtub Gin” that goes deep
“Bathtub Gin” was a source of deep exploratory improvisation from the mid-90s through 2004. Since the band returned in 2009, “Gin” has become a powerful, yet predictable, rocker. Only 2.5 versions in the 3.0 era have received the type 2 treatment – the brilliant Gorge 2009 “Gin” and the Bethel 2011 “Ginteca.” The .5 goes to the rare second set appearance at Deer Creek on 6/29/2012 where the jam seemed destined for greatness before being abruptly cut off at the eight minute mark.

3) Second jam in “Mike’s Song
It’s safe to say that “Mike’s Song” in the 3.0 era has gone about as far as it can go in it’s current retro format. At some point you have to imagine it will open up again or be shelved. Let’s hope for the former. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, read up.

4) Halloween love to Quadrophenia and Remain in Light
We’ve seen a lot of love to Loaded so far this Summer. We’ve even saw a little love to The White Album. Yet sadly, no breakout songs from Quadrophenia or Remain in Light appeared on leg one. Maybe Remain in Light songs are too difficult to pull off as a four-piece? Maybe Phish no longer have the intestinal fortitude to unleash the fury of something like “The Real Me?” Still, I’d wager that Page can still sing a fantastic “Sea & Sand.” After fans predicted its return at nearly every oceanside venue for the last three years only to be let down, someplace like Oklahoma City seems perfect for this prized bustout.

5) “Spock’s Brain
This neglected fan favorite has only been played eight times. Six occurrences were in 1995, its debut year. Given that it was soundchecked at Jones Beach, it can’t be too long before it appears again.

6) New original debut
On June 4, 2011, Phish debuted a new original in “Steam.” There has not been a new original since. The desire of fans to complain about new songs is strong. Give the people what they want.

7) 20-minute jam(s)
In all the fantastic music that came out of leg one, there was one thing missing – a 20-minute polarizing jam so half the fans can declare it the best of tour, and half the fans can say it’s overrated. Maybe we’ll have that pleasure in leg two.

8) Exploratory “Halley’s Comet
“Halley’s Comet” has been played 27 times since Phish’s return in 2009. Of those 27, only two have opened up – 6/16/2009 Fox Theater and 5/28/2011 Bethel. Every time they played it in leg one, you can practically taste the improvisational glory of the past trying to bubble to the surface. Let’s hope they blow one open in leg two.

9) “Sweet Jane” do-over
If you didn’t make it to Deer Creek, you most likely felt the equivalent of a swift kick to the groin after hearing that “Sweet Jane” made its first appearance since 10/31/98. However, that pain quickly went away upon hearing the very rough and jam-free breakout. Let’s hope they do this one over in leg two, giving it the justice it deserves.

10) Grateful Dead cover
It’s hard to argue that any band influenced Phish more than The Grateful Dead. Constant comparisons early in their career obviously got inside Phish’s collective head as the band avoided any Grateful Dead covers from 1986 until the “Terrapin Station” encore on 8/9/98 – the third anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death. Besides the shared cover of “Quinn the Eskimo,” only on two occasions since has Phish approached the Dead’s vast catalogue – “Cold Rain & Snow” and “Viola Lee Blues” with Phil Lesh at Shoreline 99, and “West L.A. Fadeaway” and “El Paso” with Bob Weir at Shoreline 2000. With Phish playing their first run in San Francisco since 1994, now would be as good a time as any to dust off a Grateful Dead original just one more time. After all, Trey plays a mean “Shakedown Street” and Page sings a fantastic “Franklin’s Tower.”

So what are your hopes and predictions for leg two? Let us know in the comments section below. To get you started, here are the wish lists of other Mockingbird Foundation volunteers.

Adam Scheinberg
1) "Lushington": it's time to restore this, even though it lives in "Fluffhead"
2) "Glide II": Yes, I know parts of it were transplanted into "Guyute." But it's beautiful and should be played again anyway.
3) New originals: we need a new injection of songs, akin to the Bearsville era.
4) Jam, just... jam. Don't be afraid to let the music find its voice. The Bethel "Waves" was gorgeous. I wonder how the MSG "Cities" might've evolved, given the chance.
5) The controversial: Shelve "DwD," "Moma," "Possum," "Number Line," "Piper," and "Divided Sky." I'm sure this will anger some people, but let some of the most common songs breathe a little, and people will welcome them with open arms when they return. Remember how "Roggae" become a fan fave when it disappeared? Let some classics sit on the shelve for a tour and let's see how fans respond.

1) A Type 2 YEM ALA the mid-90's
2) Lushington
3) If you're going to play Moma Dance, at least make it a nice long funky start/stop version like 2-26-03.
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer I'm a San Francisco native who didn't get into Phish till the end of high school (1997-1998), so outside of Outside Lands, I've never seen a *real* Phish show in my home town (let alone one on my birthday, 8/19!). All of the talk of a Dead member sitting in is awesome-- for a while I thought it was totally normal. My first two shows were 9/17/99 (Phil) and 10/6/00 (Bobby, and a Spock's Brain I didn't appreciate). So here's my list for BGCA for what it's worth:

1) Spock's Brain
2) Shakedown Street or Help > Slip > Franklin's a la 4/16/99
3) Tube w/ Tube Jam
4) A nice long, exploratory Waves
5) No ripcords if any jams start to drift into exploratory territory
, comment by Vaudvillain
Vaudvillain 1. Spock's Brain
2. Mound
3. Any Dead Cover
4. Once in a Lifetime
5. At one time I remember reading Trey talking about Master of Puppets. That would be pretty epic.
6. Lizards
I am sure we could all go on for a very long time and I will think of ten songs that I would love to hear as soon as I hit "Add Comment"
, comment by perch
perch 1. A 15-20 minute first set jam
2. A really weird narration
3. Sea and Sand
4. A 5 song second set
, comment by bankmeister
bankmeister I want a KC "Meatstick." That is all.
, comment by Wilson
Wilson no DEG mention? Esp after the huge DEG tease at JB....would love to see this dusted off..
, comment by Poizon45
Poizon45 1) A Halloween weekend in Chicago
2) Alphabetical show ranging over a weekend
3) Pick 3 songs that haven't been played in a 1000 shows and play all three in a row.
4) Master of Puppets.
5) Take the Giant country horns for a few shows!
6) Your doing a great job.
, comment by slaphappy
slaphappy Isn't time for the Band to open up a Gumbo again? The last serious Gumbo was 6/22/03. I was there and I really, really, really LOVE that song. Halley's and Gumbo use to be somewhat of rarities and now the Band can bang them out in less then 10 mins. That makes me a sad panda.
, comment by concertconfessions
concertconfessions I demand an Iron Maiden cover in Long Beach.
, comment by jcmarckx
jcmarckx 1. More 2.0 songs more often (Waves, ASIHTOS, Army of One...and yes, even Friday!).
2. Halfway to the Moon more often.
3. Sugar Shack more often.
4. New songs!!!
5. Lay off the safety songs (CDT, Julius, Cavern, Possum, Antelope...)
6. Don't play anything just because you think the crowd wants to hear it--play what YOU want to play!!!
, comment by phootyjon
phootyjon Jon Bogush

1. 5 song second set; with a nasty, jammed-out "AC/DC Bag" opener....
2. "Spock's Brain"
3. acoustic/bluegrass encore similar to what we saw in 1994
4. an electro-groove Gin (see 7.25.1997 or 7.29.1998)
5. "The Landlady"

cnote_prophet IT's funny how this article speaks of phish kicking it up a notch then begs for phish to reurn to ways of its past. You know why the mystery jams interesting because it can truly come from practically any song any time. I'd love for Phish to finally challenge it's fan base like it did in the beginning. Become completely unpredictable again. IDK how that's possible. This band inspired most of us by finding sporadic human moments by pushing edges. What happens when that becomes formulaic? IM 100% sure this is what they've been wondering since Big Cypress. IT's still the most fun ever. But, certainly it's been a long time since it was new.
, comment by SAMKiND4
SAMKiND4 I really like the Sweet Jane from 6/29/12. Its not as long as 10/31/98 (which is a badass version I really enjoy) but, I prefer Page's singing on the Deer Creek version. He sings it more his own way rather than the VU way like 10/31/98. I do agree Jam wise it is different but, I wouldn't have never thought it was "rough". Sorry you missed it. Maybe next time!!!
, comment by makisupaman
makisupaman #s 6 and 7 made me lol Chris, so thanks for that. I thought the Sweet Jane from Deer Creek was great live, however.

1) "The Listening Wind" from Remain in Light
2) "Scents and Subtle Sounds" back to regular rotation and going deep
3) Something akin to the "Glide" antics of yesteryear

4) If there are special guests at Bill Graham or elsewhere, I hope the result is like the "YEM" from @ 1997/07/09 with Bela/Flecktones
5) "Ain't Love Funny" by JJ Cale, a song that seemed to surface during especially weird shows.

weekapaugrooven (1) An exploratory 'Halley's'
(2) A 'SASS' akin to 7/30/03 (One of my ALL TIME favorite shows, and my favorite SASS, obviously)
(3) 'The Great Curve' or 'Once in a Lifetime'
(4) 'Sea and Sand'
(5) 20min+ Paug with '97/'98 tempo
(6) NEW SONGS!
(7) Type II 'Sample' (a head can dream can't he...)

I hear your point and in many regards you are completey right.....post modernism and it's components (art) can be stifling.......however - all art builds on something that proceeded it....no art is completely original or concieved without a frame of reference (literally or figuratively). Remembering that and then looking Phish - we are smack dab in the middle of the post-modern debate. Phish = lot's of history; a ton of indivdiual moments we look back on and say..."if only they could just do something like that again" and that's not particularly bad....1.0 Phish set some serious framework for what a band could do if they went all-in on a nightly basis and when they went "all-in" we got IT; we got HOSED; we got an entire encyclopedia of musical happenings that we (collectively) look back on (and debate, cherish, argue over) and marvel. 2.0 we get Phish pushing the limits of their music usually resulting in some cathartic, soupy/dark/funk laden melange of show experiences (sometimes great; 2.28.2003...sometimes not; most of Summer 2004). In 3.0 we get a "rebirth" with literally Phish and its fans rejecting the permanence of our past selves and embracing something new albeit something undeniably linked to the past. And the best part - we're not even done with developing phistory...it will continue and we will debate on its merits (thank-God); debate on the old and its relation to the new and visa versa...I guess what it comes down to is that if the boys want to revisit a theme, an effect, a shelved song, a chord progression that once blew thier (and our) proverbial socks off then more power to them....i say learn from history and build on top of it....and then reveal in the "newness" of that creation. Don't get bogged down by the "inception-point" (or being part of someone else's inception point) as it is mostly a derivative of something we've (they and us) already heard, seen, thought, or said in the past.....let get deeper in Leg 2 and build on the foundation that's a lifetime in the making....

TheManMulcahy 1) New originals. This is the single biggest thing missing, and the thing that needs the most attention, fast. We all love the playing these days, but without an injection of a certain amount of good new material soon I might become concerned for the band's long term health. It already worries me that there hasn't been more by this point.

2) Spock's Brain

3) Flat Fee

4) 2nd jam in Mike's

5) Bring back Sugar Shack and/or more Mike solo tunes

6) Grateful Dead or even a Jerry Band cover

7) Shelve a few tunes previously mentioned or others (Julius, Free) to make room for those new originals

8) Alumni at Dick's so I can finally check it off my list!
, comment by johnwcasey
johnwcasey 1. Bring back "Ain't Love Funny> "...
2. and jam it into a slowed down Reba (with whistling).
3. Back on the Train > jam
4. Trey on xylophone
5. 4 song, all bluegrass encore (Paul & Silas, old home place, Daniel saw the stone, why you been gone so long)
6. Lifeboy, Amazing Grace > amazing grace jam
7. Walfredo as 2nd set opener
8. Open a show with a long, slow Ghost jam
9. 15 Step
10. YEM opener at Pelham

I also agree with you. Ultimately the unexpected could turn out to be doing what is completely expected. And, definitely there is no original original. Also, phish this tour has been my favorite all time. It seems to me as though they've grasped the mantle of what they are and who they are as well as what they've become. They seem to be having more fun than ever. I was really just commenting on others expectations. 20+ min in the dark could be less compelling than a brilliant 3min. I appreciate Trey's big stupid ass smile more than any note he has ever played. I pray that leg 2 they channel the "itness" more than they ever have before in the way the "itness" of themselves, we the fans, and the music world at large have never seen before. Aside from that, I want to see a no set or encore break 2.5 hour show of just Fast Enough For YOU. I'd love that simply for the hilarity. It'd include plenty of teases and modulations as if they're going into something then else, but then they snap right back into the FEFY end chorus; oh and, it'd be completely rehearsed and with a symphony.

mcgrupp81 1)balls to the wall Mike's Song

I am not a musician, nor have I taken classes on tonal theory or anything of the like, but I do know that I like Trey's guitar tone from the mid-nineties more than I like the present day tone. The old tone was "rich" and "warm". Was Trey ever asked about why he has changed the tone? I figure that altering it for the sake of altering it is not what one would do.

phunky58 Ive been sayn it and ill say it again, Leg 2 is the return of the 5 song set. And im surprised alot of people have mentioned the other thing that is coming leg 2 busting out The Great Curve. Scents and subtle sounds is long overdue. Spanish moon will be coming to a venue near you soon enough also. Above all these things I will say it one more time prepare for the return of the 5 song set because it is coming without a doubt. Lastly ill throw a tune in there that I have been calling for a while now, the bustout of melt the guns and mirror in the bathrooom. Prepare for liftofff I know I am....

3) Type-2 NICU
4) More themed sets- Like a water set...imagine this set:
The Moma Dance-> Drowned-> A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing-> Waves-> Free-> Theme From the Bottom
5) Type-2 Steam (it's time)
6) Harpua> Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress> Harpua (hear me out...A Harpua story involving time travel where they go all over Phish history and end up at their very first show)
, comment by ckess22
ckess22 It's all been said apparently. Would like to reiterate that I think trey would really kill shakedown street. Other than that, just jam, fellas, just jam! Damn the great curve is awesome....that would be great, too. Wish, wish, wish.

WayIFeel I can't believe no one has mentioned a dedication to Levon Helms. People were all over that prediction for Leg 1.

Besides that I like the Shakedown calls in S.F. and it would have to be no less than a 20 min jam.
, comment by jaredprox
jaredprox Play the same exact 2 sets & encore every night. Preferably, Sample opener and Rocky Top closer with Loving Cup encore. And maybe Toby Keith could sit in at OKC. That'd be kick ass.

Remember hearing the tapes of Cup's debut (2/3/93) and being floored?...immediately to the top of most wish lists. Uhhhh, careful what you wish for?

Seriousness... I hope they have fun and play loose (see Jim, 11.29.97). You got nothing to prove boys, just be your weird-ass, genius selves.
, comment by Raible
Raible 1) One more Big Black Furry Antelope, for old times sake.
2) A second set anchored by a Mikes-> everything 1.0-> Groove
3) A Gamehendge performance, preferably out of a mediocre tune like Sample.
4) A repeat of a random 1993 or 1994 set list of their choice, reinterpreted through today's Phish.
5) Corrina entering to regular rotation, with a jam added.
, comment by alexj2
alexj2 i could not agree more that it's time for basically all of these things. jammed out mike's and halley's being of utmost urgency. that being said, it is BEYOND time that phish drops a dead tune or two into the mix. they do killer covers of every other band they claim to be a huge influence on them, but not the band with the biggest influence. i understand how before they were huge and the dead were still around in the nineties they wanted to avoid it as to create a brand distinction in the music between the two bands, but that is all history at this point. it is time for the band to marry the communities so to speak by busting out a couple of dead jams that they love.

, comment by skeeto
skeeto Grateful Dead cover would be dope. Obviously it makes the most sense to play it in San Fran, but damn it would be cool to get a shakedown street in st. louis.
, comment by TheEmu
TheEmu 1) 20 Minute Jams - Absolutely the top of my list. The frustrating thing right now is that the band is playing SO DAMN WELL, it seems like they could produce something truly magical (i.e. Bethel Waves) every single night. We're still getting some great jams, most recently I'm thinking of the Burgettstown Light (spectacular) and the SPAC Piper (awesome). But it still feels to me like too many jams get ripcorded in favor of packing more songs in.

2) If you're not feeling it, don't play it - I think that's what is happening with YEM these days, and I'm absolutely fine with that. I would rather not hear Mike's or Reba or Hood just because the band feels like they need to play it to satisfy the fans. Perfunctory versions of traditional jam vehicles just eat up set time that could be used for exploration.

3) Slow Piper back down - The slow build used to be part of Piper's identity. I think Piper still produces some great jams, but I really miss the goosebumps that the build gave me.

4) Scents and Subtle Sounds - In 2003 I thought this and Seven Below would be the next major jam vehicles. Seven Below still pops up here and there, but S&SS is practically a non-entity. Again, if it's not something the band is really feeling, I get it...but I wish it would come back with a vengance.

5) Susskind Hotel - With the same "if they're feeling it" caveat, Susskind should be making regular appearances in the rotation.

There are all kinds of tunes I would like to hear more of, including Spock's Brain, but I don't want to just turn this into a request list.

Anyway, I had a great time this summer and am jealous of everyone gettting to hit leg two. So, one more wish...how about warming up for MSG with a couple of gigs in D.C.? Maybe Philly? Pretty please? :)

3. New bustout cover every night, or atleast at each venue - like Summer '98. Great choices with "Rhinoceros" and "Runnin' with the Devil". I always thought they would sound great playing "No More Tears" by Ozzy. Page would definitely contribute to this nicely.
4. What ever happened to the jammed out "Tube"? Hasn't been one since their return. Not asking for a 12 minute version, just atleast a 7 or 8. Too cool of a jam to cut short.

Mostly I just hope they take charge and have fun themselves.
, comment by Aiken
Aiken I think the type of weird, dirty, spacey stuff that we crave and love is over, the chemistry for that is not there. However, there is a different kind of chemistry going on and I think second leg is going to be a blend of Phish we've never heard. There is still hope for things we've never heard (but sound familiar) new possibilities and unexpected musical experiences. Though I have the past of heavy rotation at home, that keeps me in a perpetual state of nostalgia, I try to focus on what will be invented in the future. It's going to take them a few years to carve a new path. Hopefully they will keep at it long enough for that to happen.

Song I heard the ocean sing at LB

A decent, even 2.0 style Theme

YEM at BG

No Dead, unless it's Terrapin, or better, Black-Throated Wind.

Don't care about Izabella

Shelve DWD, no Quinn, continue Velvet Underground.

Relax and get spacey, make me feel like I wished I'd made it to the shows I didn't.

Getting psyched for some indoor summer Phish!!

, comment by MDosque
MDosque I am a huge fan of themed sets and some thought put into being weird. Someone said an ocean theme or when they did all songs with the letter S. That kind of stuff is cool and keeps things fun and fresh. They are sounding awesome lately and clearly in a spot where the foundation is totally set and they could take some chances. As someone else mentioned, I do hope they bust out new songs and have to go for some seriously weird improvisational tangents. I could honestly care less about new covers. I want to hear their amazing songs and the improvisational magic that can arise within/out of those structures. Maybe an encore cover or third song in the first set, but that's it.

On the couch tour back on the civilized coast (:, I would love to see or read a setlist that includes...

1. Gamehenge in its entirety
2. A subtle, but easy to figure out theme to an entire show
3. Open a set with Hood and jam through, in and out of other tunes, but end the set feeling good about hood
4. Serious start/stop funk breakdown in 2001 or Tube - yeah, I also agree with someone else regarding Moma Dance - it could easily turn into a 15 minute 70's porn excursion.
5. It's true - its beyond time for a one-time Dead cover blowout and SF is just the place. Shakedown, Eyes, or a Scarlet/Fire. Just once then lay off the Dead moving forward.

Sincerely,
Dosque

6. Roggae, Heavy Things, Undermind, Round Room, KDF, Vultures, Access Me, Suskind, Babylon Baby, Halfway To The Moon with somewhat significant improv, preferably following a 3 min Ghost or 5 min Tweezer to see who is in it for the right reasons and see who is a nostalgia junkie.

davey0110 Was Ellis at San Fran for Ride Captain Ride? I've always wondered if he got to hear this tune after reading The Companion.

funkbeard 1. Another Trey symphony tour. What he brought to Phish after that tour is some of the best work of his career.

2. Keep Fishman in steroid shape. He actually played great music throughout leg 1, matching his strength to his vision.

3. Keep Mike Gordon profoundly in the groove. Sometimes he tries to play too smart, and takes away from that which makes the music dance the most.

4. Page, stay the virtuoso that you've become. Your technique has reached a whole new level! Keep going! Don't stop seeking.

5. Plasma. One of the very best TAB songs I can't get enough of. Be sick for Phish to do it.

6. The band is waiting for someone to hold up a sign that says: "Dave's Energy Guide." I want to hear it!

7. Play "Dave's Energy Guide" in all its twisted glory!

8. Do 300 songs next tour!
