History

“My Sweet One” mixes the best of Phish’s lighter side: authentic bluegrass riffs, a hint of country twang, syncopated vocals, silly lyrics, and sincere emotion.

”My Sweet One” – 11/30/91, Port Chester, NY

“My Sweet One” was ubiquitous in rotation from it’s debut on 9/9/89 in Bennington, VT through 1994. The song reached its peak during the extensive touring of 1991, when they played it 89 times in 133 shows! “My Sweet One” slipped quickly from setlists, played only thrice in 1995 (6/1512/2, and 12/14) and once each in 1997 (12/31, after a substantial movement on the net to push for the song’s return), 1998 (7/20), and 1999 (7/17), while the Phish 2.0 period saw three performances. “My Sweet One” has settled into a regular if only occasional guest in Phish 3.0, with two or three setlist visits each year.

For a not terribly complex song, there are in fact many interesting versions. There have been six  acoustic versions (5/25/94, 6/19/94, 6/22/94, 7/5/94, 11/3/94, and 11/1/09 during the Festival 8 acoustic set), and one with John Popper on harmonica (3/3/90). Be sure to check out the version from 11/30/94 that took place inside a monster “Antelope,” with band members mock snoring. 12/31/94 witnessed the song interrupted by delivery of the over-sized hot dog. 7/12/13 at Jones Beach might not sound notable on the recording, though the song took place in an unrelenting, vicious first set rainstorm.
