Short version: hear this Twist! Longer version: There weren't many bad stretches of music anywhere in 1997, and you could argue that July was as strong a month as November or December. Summer 97 was definitely Phish at their most playful--and funky. Though Fall 97 often gets given the...

To take a step back from my reviewing all of Summer '97, I should mention that if @andrewrose or @waxbanks have already reviewed a show, it's safe to ignore my review altogether. Those guys know what's up and I really appreciate their analysis and writing, and largely agree with their opinions....

Oh yeah, and speaking of the Paradiso, listen for a "on the back of the worm!" nod from Trey during the Hood peak. Quite a ride, indeed.

Not bad not bad Strong Julius to start the show. Twist gets into a nice funky groove with some nice vocal teases by Fish. Hood is very strong and especially thoughtful in its playing. Coil is gorgeous and probably fantastic for the scenery. Over all not all that bad of a show...

Notable Jam Chart Performances

Individual jam chart entries from this venue:

1997-07-05 Twist (13:49) Set 1
The jam starts to break from the standard around 5:45 and by 7:25 has morphed into a good funky groove from which a jam on Deee Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart" emerges. Settles and > to "Piper."
Groovy version with a "Walk This Way" flavor and extended Trey shredding on the backend.
Page shines throughout this single-set, free, outdoor gig, so it arrives as a bit of a surprise that it's Trey who steals the show during the course of this patient and serene encore. To be sure, Page's play is confident and assured, but Trey's late (7:00) play is as unusual as it is welcome, his tone wavy and his phrasing pushing, but not quite breaking, the bounds of the song proper. Excellent version.
