these dublin shows are a ton of fun. of course, going into the u.s. summer tour in '97 these were great tapes to pass around so all the fans could get a taste of the new tunes.
theme from the bottom was a good opener, and it was very well-played. dog stole things seemed to be very...
This show is important for historic reasons with all the debuts (First LxL! First Ghost! First Izabella!), and is a nice show, but it's far from an essential addition to your collection. It's a transitional show -- they've mastered the Billy Breathes material (Theme, Billy, and Taste are all...
The second night of Dublin features a couple repeats from night one, but they work here -- Limb By Limb is much tighter tonight, and Fishman has already shown marked improvement with the tough task of keeping time on this syncopated number. Interestingly, after LxL before Bye Bye Foot, Trey says...
This is perhaps the funkiest Chalk Dust Torture out there. The jam immediately abandons normal Chalk Dust fodder and slows down into funk-town. The segue into the debut of Ghost is flawless and the following debut of the short-lived Olivia's Pool is nice too. That 20 minute stretch of the...
Unique and interesting Tour Opener
A lot of tours open with the guys unloading a bunch of new material. Sometimes all at once and sometimes spread out. This is one of those shows where they just unload.
Limb By Limb is the first interesting part of the first set to me, only because it is a...
This is a watershed CDT. They totally spurn the normal rock jam. It doesn't morph into a funk jam, it starts that way.
If you like overanalyzing and reading too much into Phish stuff, this CDT is definitely worth listening to. On top of the pure funk jam, they have a nice patient segue into...
Somewhat of a decent show. The birth of the '97 funk can be heard throughout several of the jams. Most notably, the fantastically groovy Free. Even though the jam stays within it's chord progression, the guys lay down some hefty funk.
Not sure why the guys had to play Limb By Limb and...
Slowly warming up.
Yet another show of new songs. Even some repeats from the night before. This adds to the awkward flow of the 2nd set.
The debut of Dirt is slightly rough, but I actually like how it is played. Cars Trucks & Buses is stronger than the norm. Another LxL not far off from...
Nothing spectacular here except for two highlights. The first is the fantastic Theme opener. What a way to open a tour! Trey hits the high notes several times and the rest of the crew never misses a beat. The second is the mass amount of new songs getting played for the first time. Even...
Debut in Dublin. Many '97 - '99 versions follow this format, that involves (1) a long, harmonic, building intro, (2) a high energy lyrics and "Type I" jamming section, and (3) a short settling coda, but no exploratory jamming or improvisation.
Played twice during "Bradstock" (6/6/97), "Vultures" properly debuts in Dublin, a month before the band's historic 1997 summer tour. While the song will be reworked over the coming years, its essential elements are place, namely super intra-band improvisation, working within the "context" of the song's form, framed, in large part, by incredible percussion and rhythmic variation.
