Yep. My decision to go was a last second one, discovering that a rt ticket from Seattle was $90. The below is something I wrote for a non-phish listserv I'm on when I got back. Maybe someone here will like it. (Note: I don't think I would still call Farmhouse or Waste some of my favorite songs...
There are better shows from 1999, but this one does contain one transcendent jam: the wide-ranging 27-minute AC/DC Bag, which wanders from blissful ambient textures to comical rhythmic play to razor-sharp start/stop jamming and finally out via a wash of eerie movie-soundtrack noise. The show's...
What hasn't been mentioned about this show is how empty the arena was. Many people skipped this one, opting to stay on the I-5 corridor to connect Portland to the Bay Area. Boise was the "elbow" show that many people deemed too far out of their way. And Boise over a few chill days in...
I figure that 1999, and specifically Fall '99, is the least represented era of Phish once you get past 1992; only the Camden show and 7/31/99 have seen official release (and the Japan show was for an earthquake benefit; you could also argue that Camden wouldn't have been released without that...
I just happened upon this setlist. I can't review it (because I wasn't at this show and haven't heard it), but good God, RELEASE THIS SHOW ON LIVEPHISH!
This is one of those setlists that looks so good on paper, you some how have to find a copy.
This review is occasioned by the LivePhish archival release (I wasn't at the show.) Phans have clamoured for 9/14/99's release for some time, and many feel that 1999 is underrepresented in the LivePhish catalogue disproportionately to its quality. I've listened to merely a sample of '99, but...
I imagine only a handful of people at this show were at the Lowell show, so the crowd is exposed to a ton of new material in the summer tour opener.
An outstanding, 12-minute Possum opener gets the show off to a rollicking start. Weigh gets dusted off for the first time in 89 shows, with...
I went to 71 Phish shows between '94 and '00. I'm hard pressed to find a better one. Seriously. Maybe 1st night worchester '98 or 2nd night Hampton '99....maybe.
this is without a doubt one of the top shows of the year. I pick this second set, columbus's and memphis's for sets of the year. this show is rocking from start to finish, and they really cover a lot of ground in this one. chalk dust starts this one off appropriately. trey really drives this...
The Disease is fantastic! To all my sisters and brothers that love those DWDs that come firing out of the gates and stay hot all the way home, then check this version out. It is unrelenting. Remember that ripping DWD from Rochester 97? Kind of like that.
The rest of the show is very strong....
A masterpiece light years removed from the two big '97 "Bags." Spare on funk, the jam embarks on a somewhat dark, swirling journey. Eventually it grows upbeat, picking up rhythm and energy, arriving at a great rocking groove. Finally, it becomes eerie and outer-space-like, with Page creating chilling effects on the synthesizer.
Jam section has an unusual, repeated descending chord progression. At 8:20, it morphs into a creepy, nerve-rattling jam, returning to "Theme" proper at 9:55. The quality versions from 6/25/95 and 7/1/95 have a similar descending chord structure.
"The Wedge" reemerges to close a 135 show gap. Notable principally for the now-familiar Fish-driven intro, this compact version also features cool and confident play from Trey.
Debut. Jam section features the same spiraling Trey and Page musicianship, but the lyrics, vocalist, and ending would remain a work in progress for another year. "The Fog That Surrounds" and "Taste That Surrounds" are both very similar (related) songs performed in 1995 as the band tinkered with the format for "Taste." See the song history for "Taste" on this site for more information.
