From The Phish Book, p. 140-143: Mike: "I had my peak musical experience of all time during a gig at Goddard College in November 1985. At the time I was an engineering student pondering a transfer to film. I'd just completed a series of tests, and the pressure was temporarily off me. The...

This was my first show...I was a freshman at Castleton State and went with a bunch of people who were Vermonters and begged me to go...well I got a costume together and went dressed up as Jesus...I actually had a real crown of thorns and had paper stuck under my long hair to hold it in place......

11/23/1985 Goddard College This is a very significant show for the effect that it had on Mike. As the liner notes mention, Mike had a 'realization' after the first set of this show and realized that he wanted to be a musician for the rest of his life. It is interesting to hear the band playing...

Posted to rec.music.phish and/or submitted to the legacy Phish.net site... Trey was wearing leather pants, no shirt, little devil horns, and a big set of latex strap-on artificial breasts with chains connecting the nipples. He was having a lot of fun dancing during the opening band's (Ninja...

After several months of gigs in the Burlington area, the band returned to Goddard after nearly a year away. It's clear that the band is friendly with people in the audience, as Trey and Fish had transferred there the previous year and probably got to know folks there. The show is much looser...

Holy. Crap. First of all, the bookends: Mike's Song is OK, although I have to say that I like these early Mike's Songs with their free exploration quite a bit more than the majority of the feedback-y Mike's of later years. The first half of the Antelope jam is fairly interesting, but it then...

I keep imagining what it was like to see these folks at Goddard...just being at this little school in VT and seeing this band just KICK IT. Even if Phish never went on to be famous, I'd be pretty into this tape. These kids are just so full of talent. What's funny to me is that this is the...

Pretty good early Mike's, looks like this was the 5th time played as far as we know. Jam starts out nice, but unfortunately fades out a couple minutes in so we don't get to hear where it went. Whipping Post jam...wow. I'd like to hear something like this today. 27 minutes of improvisational...

It had been 9 months since Phish had played at Goddard, despite the fact that three members of the band at the time were students at the College. Despite their trend in playing increasingly serious shows, the band knew practically everyone in attendance at this show and lightened things up a lot....

Notable Jam Chart Performances

Individual jam chart entries from this venue:

1989-10-31 David Bowie (20:36) Set 2 Noteworthy
The "Mac 'N Cheese" version (see Setlist). Breaks away from standard "Bowie" at about 9:00 into some jarring jamming similar to "DEG." Another early one that gets WAY OUT there and includes a jam on "I'm A Man" (Spencer Davis Group) at about 16:45. Powerful trill section.
Debut, with Richard "Nancy" Wright on vocals. (Does not circulate.)
Labeled "Whipping Post Jam" in the Setlist, little of this 27 minute open-ended improv session sounds anything like the song. It's more of an early example of the band's inherent improvisational nature. Even if not superb music, it's worth the journey back in time to hear where it all came from.
