also check out the ghost and twist->taste
some people might not realize, given how it has become more regular since, but twist was one of the lesser played songs from the 97 ghost-era batch of songs, however the band consistently took the jam for type II jaunts when they did play it
this is...
This is a solid show that feels a bit uneven -- there are some lulls in the action, but the high points are very high. In the first set, Gumbo is one for the ages, and in fact is the first ever jammed out Gumbo that was a sign of things to come (8/13/97, 8/3/98, 8/15/98). Ghost is huge too, and...
This show was truly special. Funny how it works, too, because many people on tour did not go down to AZ of TX, as the summer temps were very high and these shows were seen as a bit out of the way. Also, many kids wanted a break from the first half of the west coast, before the midewest and east...
Drove down from Oregon to do this western leg of the summer tour, and this was the opener. I was in climate shock as I arrived down near Vegas, it was 90 degrees at 9 PM!! I looked over at my dog (border collie/heeler) riding shotgun, and I apologized in advance for the brutal temps that we...
I was not at this show but I have played the tape more than any other 98 summer tour show.
The 2nd set has the best Simple ever. I still have not heard a Simple that's better than this one.
If there one out there let me know.
The Mike's>Simple>Bittersweet>Weekapaug is just killer. The jam...
This show contains my all-time favorite Gumbo. So funky, with Page destroying the organ and Fish keeping it interesting throughout.
First jammed and funked out version of a song that I hope makes its return this year as the BEAST it should be.
Wolfman's->Scents and Subtle Sounds is the best segment of this otherwise middling show. Wolfman's funks it up for a bit and then moves into a section with a repeating heavy riff, which is reminiscent of the famous 11/30/97 version. Thankfully, this one does not stay on that same riff for...
With Winter 03 firmly cementing the sentiment of, "They're back," with a healthy portion of "Holy shit they're better than ever," there was zero question that Summer 03's expectations were a little higher than many other tours, before or after. Rightfully so. Winter 2003 was an embarrassment of...
I think it was Phish that brought the heat to Arizona this night. This show is a scorcher! Bag Fluffhead opener had us all dialed in out of the gate. Roggae at this point was becoming a tour favorite and this helped cool people down but only briefly before the funked up Tube which is definitely...
Awesome, extended, and uniquely remarkable version that departs into a low-key, melodic and exploratory groove that has moments of really beautiful, major mode jamming before working back into nasty old "Antelope."
The first jammed out "Gumbo" features a funky jam with Trey laying it down on his wah pedal. The jam begins to get spacey while Trey starts high pitched noodling out of a which a 4 chord descending pattern (not MLB) develops, with some beautiful work by Page (which sadly doesn't last long).
Exploratory version with some variations on the "Twist" theme through 9:10, when the jam breaks away. After some brief engine grinding, a dark, dissonant section emerges, before eventually brightening and -> to "Taste."
A great version with a combination of good, low intensity 2.0-style funk grooves and quiet, spacious exploration that -> to the debut of "Scents And Subtle Sounds."
Funky groove into epic soaring balls-out rock and roll supernova that throbs smoothly into bluesey intro for "She Caught the Katy." [Quality and extended straightforward "Ghost" jamming eventually takes on a nice swinging blues vibe and -> to "She Caught The Katy."]
After opening in a nice groove, this long single jam settles into familiar "Mike's" ground. After some "Manteca"-like jamming, the play settles and grows more funky. When Page hits the piano just after 14:00, the big peak kicks in with all guns blazing.
Mellow "C&P"-like groove into Monster Funk ending in Went "Gin"-like jam. [A typically funky '97 version releases and then breaks into an excellent upbeat and hose-filled groove.]
