Mike's new bass provided an element the band didn't even know it was missing, and this show is the first joyous exploration of that element. If you're a Phish fan you should have the album 'Slip Stitch and Pass,' which is a defining document for the band. The Wolfman's > Jesus, Mike's > Lawn Boy...

this show was immortalized on the album slip stitch and pass, which, in my opinion, is the best single disc phish has released. the album has something for everyone, new and old, but believe me, there is some good stuff in the rest of this show too. cities is a fantastic opener. obviously, i...

More a sum of its parts show than a cohesive statement, which makes the fact that it was divvied up into Slip, Stitch & Pass as a single disc rather than just released as a full concert make a bit more sense than it would appear at first blush. But oh golly, how good those parts are - the...

it should be mentioned that the rolling stones "cant you hear me knocking" was heavily teased at the end of weekapaug.

Having heard Slip Stitch and Pass a few times, I dove into this show not expecting too much of a surprise. I mostly anticipated a few fluffed songs to fill out the sets and figured all of the especially praiseworthy material would be in the SS&P-featured tunes. While the band certainly curated...

This is probably my favorite single show that I've ever seen (not counting festivals) and was the highlight of the 3 shows they'd performed in Germany on that European tour. The venue was amazing and it felt like we were right up on stage with the guys and, afterwards, Mike was out milling around...

I'm not sure how much I can add, except that after listening to this whole tour front to back, this show stands out as having one of the best setlists, THE best jams, and the best overall flow and phish-iness. Wolfman's is THE jam of the tour, and the Weekapaug (first of tour!!!) is one of the...

The final two-set show of the Europe tour finds the band playing a venue that would be immortalized on the band's return seven months later, the show that wound up being released as Slip, Stich and Pass. On this night, like during most of the 1996 Europe tour, the band is technically sound but...

Anyone else hear a What's The Use tease at the around 5:20 mark of taste?

Check out the Manteca tease by Page during Carini. Great 2nd set!

Notable Jam Chart Performances

Individual jam chart entries from this venue:

1997-03-01 Wolfman's Brother (13:51) Set 1 Noteworthy
Game changing version launches "Wolfman's" as a jamming vehicle. The improvisational jam works through several sections of serious funk, gains rocking legs around 12:00, before more funk and a masterful -> to "JJLC."
1997-03-01 Jesus Just Left Chicago (12:12) Set 1 Noteworthy
Great -> in from "Wolfman's Brother." Strong modulation of intensity in this stellar version. Huge peak at the end of Page's section is followed by near silent soloing by Trey, which gradually builds to a roaring, bluesy crescendo.
1997-03-01 Possum (9:43) Set 1
Heavy metal jamming in the intro and more in the jam itself.
1997-03-01 Mike's Song (13:52) Set 2
Some funky sounds and good variation away from the standard underpin the 1st jam. The 2nd jam breaks into an easy going groove and features some crazed lyrical and musical references to the Doors and Pink Floyd, including quotes of "The End," Peace Frog," and "Careful With That Axe, Eugene."
Amusing lyrical improvisation from Trey, as he parodies the Doors' classic "The End", followed by "CYHMK" teases in the jam and a "CYHMK"-like ending. (This version is on "Slip Stitch and Pass.")
Starts to break away from the standard at about 8:00 into a driving, rhythmic jam which gets out there nicely. Returns to "DwD" only in the final minute, with a > to "McGrupp." Much more exploratory than most '96 versions excl. 11/27/96.
The jam section has a nice swinging vibe at first, with the others quietly supporting Page. Trey and Fish kick it up a few notches, then there's a sweet little salsa jam which sounds very much like "The Landlady." This fun little jam seems to magically segue back into "McGrupp" proper and the customary closing section. Great version.
> "2001", check out the fun, "Euro" clapping running through the intro. Surprisingly, the jam assumes a slightly darker sentiment, which runs counter to "Jim's" usual plucky, upbeat tone. Fish is super, as is Trey, and play almost seems to veer into "CHYMK" before brightening, Trey leading the band into the song's customarily strong conclusion.
1996-07-23 Mike's Song (16:53) Set 2
Single jam version which organically moves away from standard fare at around 8:50 and grows dim, quiet and probing. Eventually, the play morphs back into powerful, tense "Mike's" jamming, settles, and transitions to "Hydrogen" without the customary closing chords.
