I think this show’s low rating is more about song selection than playing. To that end, it was posted on Instagram that this was Trey’s vocal coach’s first show. To that end, some of the set list reflects songs where Trey is probably trying to show off his singing lessons (mercy, Shade, Drift),...
One of the lowest rated shows on Phish.net in a long time it seems; I can see why - but Im going to say this at the very least. ASIHTOS was epic. That is something you will need to listen to if you have not.
Honestly, this show was no all timer but it was also no full on snoozer either. The...
Happy birthday Jim!
First off, about the venue and Wilmington. The venue is beautiful. The field has a very gentle slope to it and the sightlines are very clear. I was pretty close to the rail on Mike's side, so I can't comment on the sound throughout the field, but all band members were...
Well, well, well…. Wilmington N1.
Had high hopes for this show especially coming off 3 heaters in Alpharetta. Tonight just seemed a little off. I was in attendance and the band just couldnt get it going imho.
The start of set 1 was very strong. A good simple into camel walk.
Then comes...
The cruelest of rains!! This show was red hot before the rain shut it down. I was up close, and water was flying of Fishman's cymbals as he hit them. It was wet up there too. Fairly brutal rain at times, and enough lightning to make you wonder if you should be as unprotected as we all were...
We escaped the dreadful night...
I'm shocked this show is scoring so low. It might not stand out besides the giant "Rained Out" asterisk, but the venue was cooking from Page's first notes on CTB. The venue was very intimate, maybe 7000 people, and the staff was super hospitable in my...
By no means was this a "bad" show, but just very forgettable. It reminded me of being a kid and being super excited to see a classic rock act only to leave feeling really disappointed.
There's a lot of songs here that I really like but they weren't exactly spectacular versions. Cavern,...
It's good to be at Phish shows. This was my first show since 2019, and my first at the venue. To quote Nicky Sobotka from the Wire "It's f***ing picturesque is what is." Any place with an entrance and exit that can be accessed via a boardwalk on the adjacent river is gonna be an improvement over...
Phish coming to town has been very exciting for me. Traveling to shows is awesome, but sleeping in my own bed 4 miles from the venue absolutely rules.
Live Oak has a tent problem. It's been there for 3 years. But this show was one of the least affected by it as the lights were above it from...
I agree with some of the points made from other attendees, and maybe the expectations were outsized, but I thought it was pretty awesome overall. The 3 songs at the end of the first set would be my only complaint. The second set was fantastic... but I love 20 years later and bdtnl. i am a joy...
Trey and Mike kick off the improv early in the first set with interlocking leads that propel the jam over an atmospheric bed of Page's keys matched by Fish's energetic pocket. Pointed play ensues, building some tension as both leads adjust tone. The mood eventually brightens and Trey picks out melodic lines as the jam accelerates pushed by Mike's pulsing attack. The band locks in behind Trey for a big trilling peak that leads to a full return.
A slower take on the song itself opens what would become a storm-shortened set 2. The band wastes no time diving into propulsive improvisation that efficiently modulates more than once. Listen as Page begins a conversation enjoining instant feedback from Trey and Mike that grows into a fluid three-way exchange and bounces comfortably over several minutes with impressive ease on Fishman's driven play, delivering a satisfying peak before > to an excellent "Oblivion".
> from "Chalk Dust Torture." The second version of "Oblivion" gets taken for a big-time walk. This is grimy, dirty Phish; no bliss jamming or peaks to be found. Page on the synth, heavy effects from Trey, this is a truly exploratory jam.
Vocal calisthenics give way at first to thoughtful and melodic play morphing quickly to an exceptionally groove driven thumper that begs for dancing. Aggressive leads strut with swagger over a thick bed of funky rhythm that decays into a hazy stew, regaining some drive before > to "Light". Excellent.
