The instrument played during "Only Had a Brain" is the nose flute. Artis played it. He also sometimes played tin whistle, and if I recall correctly sometimes used blew the tin whistle with his nose. (Hilarious - part of the experience of Artis is seeing him.) I saw Phish a fair amount during...

This is the fifth and last show at the Roseland, 43rd of the tour, and another pretty average performance for '93. The April Fool's joke was that Neil Young was going to jam with them, which added some fun banter to this one, but more squeaks and squawks in the sound system plagued Paul and Pete...

Ok show tonight. Kind of hissy bootleg, boomy Page heavy mix. A few chopped spots and tape flips. Nice Jim to get warmed up. Good Forbins, complete with Icculus. Good Mockingbird. Pen and Sloth have a few warts in the middle. Landlady and parts of Fluff sound like Trey's out of tune....

Show seems to be generally very high energy and fun (Landlady, Divided Sky), although I wasn't particularly fond of the Hood. I'm pretty sure Mike said "You know you can count on Cactus take good care of you" during My Sweet One. Oh, and we now know the scientific name for Fishman is...

Sounds like the tease is "Heart of Gold" to go along with the April Fools joke.

I stood on the street and grooved outside the big, open windows for this and the next night. First time I was ever shut out of a Phish show. Guess I could have begged around the backstage door area, but Roseland had annoying security people. "Sir . . . Sir . . . Excuse me, sir." So, I stood...

I agree with Dollarbill's overall review, though I think the highlights elevate this show above others of this time period. I'd add that Trey really rips apart The Arrival in Fluffhead, it sounds like it might be a tapping solo to hit as many notes as he does, all in time. The jam chart entries...

For the most part, I don't find too much to comment on regarding the playing at this show. There's a few tunes (Foam, YEM, Tweezer) that get a little sloppy in places. Not horrible, just not really sharp. Trey takes a moment before Esther to compliment the venue for being the only place where...

wasn't at this show . but this was one of my first tapes. so much sentimental value. it was a really good audience copy of the first set with the bag encore. Having stipulated all that: The Runaway jim mkes me feel like I'm in a comforter going 200mph great opener. the sound of the room and was...

This show looks better on paper than it sounds in the ears. The 42nd show of the tour is a return to the Roseland Theatre for the fourth time. The average playing seemed to be hampered all night by the squeaks and squeals of the monitors being EQ'd and/or mixed, so I guess Pete or Paul had a...

Notable Jam Chart Performances

Individual jam chart entries from this venue:

1993-04-01 Stash (10:38) Set 1
Moves beyond "Stash" at about 7:00 for a good 2 minutes of exploration before returning.
1993-04-01 Tweezer (14:10) Set 2
Very CYHMK-like jam for several measures. Smokes!
1992-04-24 Stash (10:24) Set 1
The first seriously exploratory version with rhythmic gyrations, unusual melody from Trey, and experimental playing.
While the first section is another solid April '92 showing, the real meat here is the 2nd jam, which has unusually exploratory and improvisational play for this period, even jazzy sounding Mike and some carnival-like melodies from Page and Trey.
An unusual vocal jam occurs alongside "On Broadway" teasing, followed by a rocking and intense jam, which is unfinished, and -> to "The Mango Song."
1992-04-24 Llama (4:56) Set 2
What do you call it when the sick get sicker?
1991-10-12 Brother (4:31) Set 2
Artis the Spoonman as gueat artist. A very different "Brother" with Page taking the lead on organ, and some very cool percussion work from Fish and Artis the Spoonman on spoons. Trey is very restrained until the end when he cranks it up.
