Who the hell is already rating this show 3 out of 5 within the first 15 minutes of voting being available? Jaded vets? TAB critics?
We just got the 2nd Phish Mr. Completely EVER and a Caspian that flipped to building upside down out of nowhere.
There was ridiculous firepower tonight in the...
On our way from Baltimore to Pittsburgh, my buddies and I were playing a game. The game was to spot triple numbers on license plates. The goal was to get them all (000,111,222) etc. We almost got them all.
Show starts with 555. V cool.
Every song seemed to be played well in the first set...
Whoever it is that is giving every show a low star count and downvoting other reviews, please stop. We are experiencing something special this summer, so it's not fun to go to a show, scroll down to the ratings/reviews and see that every time.
That being said, the show in retrospect was a...
I’m gonna be blunt, I’m just not that into phish these days. It’s a combination of things but I mostly just don’t have the time or energy to be as dedicated like I once was. After not seeing the band for a few years it was hard to pass up a hometown show and I’m so glad I didn’t. At 40+ years...
This one was special for me.
Decided to go solo for this show since my buddies couldn’t swing a 5 hour trip to Pittsburgh on a Wednesday. Understandable, but something in my gut told me that I’d get something unique. I’m spoiled because MSG is my home venue so I was pretty stoked when I saw...
My capsule review is this show was well worth the time and aggravation it took to find decent tix on COT long after the show went on sale, and the general difficulty of attending a not-exactly-hometown-but-definitely-regional weeknight show while not totally falling down on professional or...
At some point in the recent history of the world, someone thought it was a good idea to create a full-sized, professionally crafted flag that said nothing but "CLIT" on it. Someone else thought it was a good idea to buy that flag and bring it to a Phish show. This same person, along with some...
Bonus show! Got to see the boys 5 times this year with bookends in Cleveland & Pittsburgh (which is great because I live near Youngstown).
On this frigid, flurry-filled, winter-coat-weakening evening, the Phish brought us the heat inside the Pete!
S1 was a typical high energy experience...
Well, I had set out to review the entire tour, but this is becoming ridiculous!
Mr. Completely!!! Out of control.
I did the math (like lots of others) and looked at the number of songs that V3 has played in the past, and either:
1) Are Phish originals
2) Are band member originals
3)...
I personally heard this as another strong 2017 show that started with an eclectic first set, though this first had more highlights than any of tour so far. Undermind sucked me in, Divided Sky lifted me up, and then Caspian chewed me up and spat me out in the best way possible. I love this tune...
Inspired full-band play departs "Caspian" proper around the 5:00 mark. Trey shapes his tone, and his impassioned and varied soloing arrives as if from some astral plane. The jam then cools to float upon an atmospheric, yet highly musical wave, whose "No Quarter" undertones give way to trilling which slowly builds to the first of several very powerful peaks.
The band, as if making up for not playing the song in 134 shows, delivers a choice version. Joyous soloing from Trey and Page intertwine beautifully, turning the Petersen into a windswept cathedral of sound which culminates in a peak of heartfelt glory. That said, it's Fishman's driving, propulsive play and blistering fills that truly elevate this special performance.
Shades of '98 with somewhat dark "Gumbo" riffing that gives way to a serene major sound and briefly ascends to the astral plane before touching back down around 11:00, leading to a final chorus and Page's ragtime outro.
A little extra attention to detail early on tantalizes and hints at the spicy enchilada to come. Plenty of extra hot sauce, a satisfying dose of tension, and heaps of Trey-tosterone cap off this delicious and rewarding set closer.
-> from a fun "YEM". Given how strong its jamming was from the first few versions played, it may have seemed inevitable a HUGE version would appear. This 40 minute masterpiece is just that. Moving from section to section with deftness and poise. Clearly, the band feels comfortable jamming this song, and this may be the cream of the "WGTYM" crop. Must-hear.
Punchy, "Tube"/"Jibboo"-esque funky groove, with Trey melodically soloing o'er top it for a spell, eventually but abruptly modulates key and diminishes into "Circus."
Patient and smooth, all four musicians contribute to a cerebral and stately version. Mellow, yet highly musical, play features superb improvisation atop Fish's shuffling beat, with ideas swapped and recycled through subdued play (listen for a lot of "lead" Mike) which considerably brightens as Trey fires a number of notes (inducing a great reaction from the audience), before heavy, almost ominous play, morphs to become highly psychedelic in nature. This, slowly then, > into "Ghosts of the Forest" poignant Phish debut.
Busted out after a 380 show absence, Phish goes 2 for 2 on delivering the goods with this TAB standby. The jam quickly goes "Type II" and features bliss jamming aplenty as well as some new synth sounds from Page.
With Trey's struck notes skipping like stones atop bedrock Fish, a change leads to more by way of melodic soloing which, effortlessly, Trey whips into a blast of huge, clock-watcher sustain, play which separates this version from most others (see 10/20/21 for similar, inspired, jamming).
