Let's keep it short and sweet:
Set 1: Really interesting that 3 of the four "new" songs are Phish debuts as opposed to full debuts (much like 2/26/03's debut-laden first set); Heavy Rotation, even though it took a toll on poor Page's voice, had a nice "second jam" worth hearing again. Mercury...
Some context that's important to keep in mind: last year, Phish released an album called "Fuego." Then, on Halloween, they played eleven high-concept songs (essentially an entire additional album). On the first night of this run, they premiered three brand-new pieces of music, and at this show,...
Its an average show in a well above average era. The lack of a Big Jam that came a handful of times per tour just a few years ago clouds a drum beating for this.
Definitely some replay here though- Ghost > BoaF goes nowhere, Ghost cooled off and had a chance but the sloppy transition killed...
Couch toured last night, so I am not sure what the live vibe was like, but it looked like fun was had all around from what I could tell. The Fare Thee Well shows definitely had Trey ready to rip and he did for most of the night! That aside, an “average” show for Phish, but certainly an above...
This is my first review. I don't consider myself the best person to review phish, let alone any musical act. It was a generic email from phish.net that beckoned me to review this show, so I decided "why the hell not" and took the opportunity to share a few thoughts.
My girlfriend and I raced...
The highlight of set 1 for me was Fishman's melodic work on the marimba lumina during Mercury, and watching Trey's face as he was doing so. Other highlights continue with the new material- I hope Scabbard finds a home in the Phish catalog, because that song has never sounded so good before. Even...
Not quite sure where this sits on the list of all time tour openers - probably towards the middle. The complaints will likely be the lack of a 18 minute-plus jam that will surely leave some "fans" butt hurt... and neither set really had a flow going until the end of the second set - when they...
This show was super hot fire. I was kind of disappointed by the fact that there were no super long memorable jams., but what this show lacks in jams, it makes up for in setlist flow and crazy high energy. The only songs that weren't extremely engaging were devotion and halfway to the moon, either...
To me this was a show of missed opportunities. I felt like there were too many slow songs, definitely not enough jamming. I felt like there were some great themes in Sand, Ghost, Mikes, and Fuego that were never really explored, only awkwardly ended. Highlight for me would be no mans land>paug. I...
Fun show to start the tour. Enjoyed the new songs, Blaze on being the one I'm most excited for. Sand was nice. Ghost was good but had more potential. Boaf=they attack! The Mikes>Wedge>Fuego was my highlight. This show will most likely get over looked due to the lack of jams, but I love shows like...
This version has a relaxed, feel-good vibe that's one part "Gin," one part "LxL," and four parts Phish. Eventually peaking in a strong manner, the closing adds appropriate punctuation.
The typically joyful "Simple" jam makes a turn to the Dark Side, as Trey leads the band into a stark exploration with a somewhat Pink Floyd-like tone. Listen for Mike's approval bell.
Debut. Pretty and delicate play, with Fish offering a sturdy bridge by way of Marimba Lumina, beneath deliberate (and yet to be repeated) vocal harmonizing. A "Tweezer" cum "Help on the Way" outro showcases the composition's seemingly infinite potential.
The jam makes a nice modulation to major mode where the band builds to a peak thanks to Trey's melodic playing. After shifting back to minor mode and revisiting the song proper, the jam mode shifts again and > to "Waves." Short but sweet.
This very cool, effects-laden version features Trey finding a theme of sorts in his solo (a series of riffs). Page responds in kind. And Trey trills. He modifies his tone. He bends notes. And he builds in some serious sustain. Mike does not deploy his drill, and this adds something extra to the outro. Must-hear.
Trey's tone and chording give this solid version a slightly edgy, more rock-oriented feel than the typical "ballad" type version. Apprearing mid 2nd set before an excellent "Simple,", it's not so much a "breather" song as a rocking downshift before revving up for what followed.
