this was my first taste of phish in nashvill/antioch. i attended the show here the next summer. this one gave me a good taste of what i was in for. between this show and the 2000 one, i shall never miss another one in this city or at this venue.
pyite: they came out hot on this one. pyite...
Great first set to this show. Great sit in with Jerry, Ronnie, and Tim. Who knew Wolfman's Brother & Roggae would work so well with those instruments? All of the playing complemented the songs nicely. Further expanding what they could do with songs outside of extended jams.
Set two has...
I saw all the Starwood shows and this was my favorite. I went with my buddies Will C. and Will P., who as crazy as it sounds, were born in the same hospital on 5/3 of whatever year that they were both born in--you know its gonna be trippy going with two characters like that as your show...
My fourth show, and the one that absolutely confirmed I'd come back a lot! Also, this show represents my only contribution to the HPB/TPC, which for years had the show listed at The Veranda and did not note the Hank Williams contribution.
My girlfriend chose not to come with me to Nashville...
it was good to get phish back in the states. I actually grabbed 7th row tickets to this show off of ebay for way less than face value... very odd. I had been to this venue the year before. While it was a gang buster show, it was a little short due to massive rains, so we were ready for phish...

1999 is Full of Unique Phish Shows.
On the heels of a brilliant ambient jam-filled show in Bonner Springs, Kansas, Phish seemingly spun 180 degrees in the opposite direction and proceeded to drop the Antioch, Tennessee bluegrass tinged gem of a concert. A stunning collection of country and...
Great show, but I want to specifically single out this version of Slave to the Traffic Light. It's got a quietly peaceful middle section before the build. The last minute is breathtaking.
Swift and high-energy playing throughout. A clean, linear build in energy, from patient and quiet interplay between Page and Trey at the beginning, building with whale call bends and rotary swirl, finally ascending to a heavenly peak. Very happy and massive hose during the peak; spacey jam on the back end -> to "2001."
-> in from the intro to "Hood." Robbie McCoury on banjo, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Sam Bush on fiddle. "Dog Faced Boy" is played in entirety in the intro. > back to "Hood."
An interesting jam which takes a more reserved, melodic route with Fish playing unaccompanied for a time as the band comes down to near silence briefly. The latter part of the jam includes some effects from Page and a nice ascending progression.
Robbie McCoury on banjo, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin, and Sam Bush on fiddle. "Hood" intro -> "Dog Faced Boy" > "Hood." Unfortunately the AUD recording does not do justice to this cool instrumental arrangement. KS - Live Bait Vol. ?
Some really fine, unusually restrained but passionate soloing by Trey is followed by wonderful Page soloing without the usual noisy closing chords. Instead, Page's solo > to "YEM."
As if playing to extinguish the pouring rain, Trey's "soloing" is incendiary, a sort of in-your-face jamming possibly unparalleled. The jam isn't totally absent nuance, however, and play cools to become a bit introspective before the band nimbly works towards the song's conclusion and > "Caspian."
