At the time this was my favorite of the tour besides 7/6. Solid show. The Carini is comical and started the show off with a bang. I love how Fishman starts yelling when they start saying "Carini's gonna get ya!"
Just an all around solid setlist really but this Tweezer is a BEAST! Maybe my...
PA problems bailed Trey out of what has to be one of the worst Divided Skys ever. And (sorry Trey) he started fucking up before the PA did on that one.
Other than that, it boggles my mind how underrated this show is. [b]Show me another show with two 20 minute jams in one set that scores...
This is a solid show start to finish. The monster jams come almost back-to-back in Tweezer and Drowned.
this tweezer . . . holy crap. starts out funky, with that patient sort of groove that is gonna go places. and go places it does. around 10 minutes fishman starts to propel the beat...
Awkward and anti-climactic for a European tour closer. The Halley's comet is longish, like 20 minutes and Mike is laying down this evil ominous backbeat while Trey messes with delay loops. Listen to this show if not just for this.
The AUDs of this tour are phenomenal! If you are in the fence...
The last show of their 98 Europe tour had a few glitches to say the least. There were issues with the venue, which I don't think had seen anything like a phish crowd come through. I'm not sure they were prepared for such a thing. I heard some fans complaining they were raising drink prices as...
I thought I'd chime in seeing as a lot of the reviews are negative and this show has a low rating due to the aborted first set. There are still some strong jams here that are definitely worth your time. Halley's is the epitome of mellow 98 funk. Trey keeps it pretty low key but I like what I'm...
To the best of my knowledge, the melody Trey finds towards the end of the Halley's jam will emerge at least two more times in '98. In Phish's next show in Portland, 7/15/98, their first American show of the tour, this melody will be integral to the jam that follows Horn; and we'll hear it again...
This show is crazy underrated. The show opening Moma is super funky and the 18-minute Gin that follows is fantastic. Punch has a cool fade out/in silent jam thing. This Wilson is off-the-charts evil and abuts a short, but very cool/chill BOAF. Ghost-> Johnny B. Goode is a great rocking...
This show Starts out on Fire! With a rockin Moma Dance(4.5) and with a 19 min Bathtub Gin(4.5) that the band jams hard....followed by unique PYITE. The start of PYITE(4.5) is different and worth a listen but during the middle of the song Trey flubs the lyrics but the beginning of the song makes...
Calling this version among the greatest in Phish history is not an overstatement. Goes from serenely funky to balls-to-the-wall badass. "Things That Make You Go Hmmm" tease from Mike. At around 16:30 in this version the chord progression is that of "Wolfman's Brother."
One of the earlier examples of the groove-based jamming that would blossom in '99 and '00. Mike takes the lead and Trey and Page gradually build off this, including a nice "First Tube" tease. The jam winds down in ambient '98 space.
Jam segment is blistering from the very start, and somehow the band maintains a ferocious intensity for about six minutes, after which the jam cools off into a rock groove, which coasts along for awhile (Fish on cowbell for a bit too), with Mike stepping up at times, and concludes admirably with a return to Drowned's chords, before the jam slows down and segues into Theme.
Strong playing in the early section, as is the case for many '98 renditions of "Moma". The jam segment is extended and has some nice, ascending melodic playing in the last few minutes. Outstanding version for this period.
A confidently sloppy, set-opening rendition gets aggressive as soon as the vocals end. In place of a solo, the band drones away in a heavy choogling mood with crisp Fishman fills, before Trey finds a descending riff, and Page responds masterfully with blistering organ.
