This was my 29th birthday show and a real whopper. I caught the Fox show the night before then drove to Charlotte. We got there early and were able to hang out by the door and hear the soundcheck. We heard them soundcheck the Jump monk, they also checked Purple Haze and, i think, Foxy Lady by...

Prett-ay prett-ay good show with some great jams and good flow. My Friend My Friend, Ya Mar is an ideal show opening pair in my opinion, so no complaints there. Axilla (II)>Maze ratchets up the intensity from there. The following Gin is one of the very few improvisational versions of the song...

THE GOOD: This show started off the southern kick of the tour and the band put some extra umph in the bluegrass numbers - check out My Sweet One, which may be the fastest version ever. Speaking of speed, also take a listen to the hyper Axilla I which is followed by a break-neck Antelope....

Nothing out of the ordinary in the first set, although it is always thrilling to hear Trey at the height of his powers weave his way through a Foam jam. The Horse has a long than normal intro as well. Antelope and Hood are the standouts of this show. Lizards is also a bit longer and looser in...

Notable Jam Chart Performances

Individual jam chart entries from this venue:

1994-04-24 David Bowie (21:29) Set 2 Noteworthy
First of the "Big" '94 "Bowies." This is an unbelievable journey of music and improvisation, spine tingling at times, and thrilling by the conclusion. And the best was yet to come.
"Gin" -> "Jump Monk" -> "Gin." Quality jamming early on with variations on the "Gin" theme. The "Jump Monk" (Charles Mingus) segue comes near the end (one of only 2 Phish performances of this jazz classic).
1994-04-24 Jump Monk (1:17) Set 1
-> from "Bathtub Gin." One of only two performances of this Charles Mingus jazz classic. -> back to "Gin."
-> in from "Jump Monk." Quick return to end "Gin" before > to "Dog Faced Boy."
Here, there's a noticeable, bouncy groove to the jam section, like you want to tap your foot along, which seems unusual for "Slave." And Trey really brings it on heading into the finish.
Frenetic playing and lots of little brief departures that stretch the boundaries of "Antelope" and then keep coming back. Trey's playing is incredible. Released on Live Bait Vol. 4.
