Always enjoyed this show, i know that it is often overlooked but the setlist was decent and the show seemed to flow very well. I love Mountains in the Mist, and was really pleased to get this in 1999. I heard it during Trey Tour but it was more meaningful this evening.
The First set contained a lot of energy and the Tube > CTB > Gumbo Moma Dance was awesome.

OMG!!! I can't believe this was ten years ago... Yeah, they played "Silent in the Morning" without "The Horse" which was a bit confusing. This was back when trey would break out his acoustic and play "the Inlaw Josie Wales" from time to time. "NICU" was good and "SAND" brought down the house. "Jibboo", "Heavy Things" (good encore) were standard in the era; "Limb by Limb" had a pretty cool jam if i recall. "Golgi Apparatus" saw a lotta people with 'ticket stubs in their haaands'.
First set was all good, although it ended a bit drably with "Piper>TFtB"...all in all - a solid phish show that I have nothing but good memories from.

This show reaffirmed my love for the band! Great 1st set with a typical Theme ending. However, the best part about this show for me was the first part of the 2nd set. Ran into a buddy in line for a beer during intermission. He says I should hang with him at his seats. Turns out he was on the floor right up front. The most memorable part of this show was standing essentially right in front of Mike for the first few songs including the sick baselines of Jibboo and Sand! I'll never forget it! The day before this show, Trey's Grandfather, Harry Jones (aka "Granpoodie"), had passed away, which he had acknowledged from the stage that night in Hartford, CT. (It is also speculated that the rager the night before at the Spectrum was Trey trying to send his Grandfather energy through their music.) One would expect this loss to profoundly affect anyone's immediate mood, even someone as ebullient as Trey. And while effect isn't notable in the song selection for the first and second sets, the Horse-less Silent In The Morning, Heavy Things encore allows one to read between the lines and discern Trey's emotional state.

12/13/99 isn't a "dark" or "heavy" show like, say, 6/14/00 or 8/3/03, but this show is notable for the absence of rock and roll tunes (Golgi being the lone exception). Instead, the setlist highlights the groovier side of the band, along with a typically frantic Piper and an especially joyous Limb By Limb. Sand is my pick for Jamming MVP of 1999, and this standout version was deemed worthy for broadcast during the IT Festival From The Archives shows. Indeed, it's odd that a late-1.0 show with no less than 5 jam chart entries would have a rating this low - but that demonstrates how unique this show is. This Monday night show wasn't for the bros, or the pham, it was for the band; one last moment of contemplation before resuming the party in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Tube kicks off the show fast as usual, and contains some notable drum work by fish. Cars, Trucks, and Buses is also very strong, with some nice wah guitar work by Trey. Gumbo has a cool slower jam in it's center. Another very intense Piper that burns out towards the middle and begins to churn and pulse, as the guys look for a new direction. Fish steps in with a thunderous beat that sinks into a deep groove that seems fitting going into Theme From the Bottom, which is a strong set closer.

Jibboo is fairly standard to start things off. NICU is notably good. Sand has an interesting vibe to start it, almost other worldy. It goes into what sounds like a "Mind Left Body Jam" tease and the groove and rhythm stay in that vein. It feels like a Type 2 jam without actually being one. Trey has a lot of fun with it as it gets more and more intense towards the end. Mike and Trey duel it out at the end to a great conclusion. After Sand things seem to feel a bit uneven the rest of the set. Mountains in the mist is a gorgeous version. LXL has some great shredding by Trey at the end. Slave is standard but for a song like that standard is also good.

The encore has two straightforward versions of Silent and Heavy Things.

Overall an odd show to rate. It has great moments. But some of it also feels mailed in. 3 stars.

Actually just wanted to comment that there is a definite "Gumbo" tease from Mike in "The Moma Dance." Not sure how that get's added to the notes, but figured I'd mention it here.

[I was looking back on some 1999 shows I attended but didn't remember much from, so I decided to give them a download and re-listen to figure out if they were any good.]

Tube starts things off with a bang, jam features some high energy playing from Trey over a delay loop with mike dropping some serious bombs in the background. An uptempo CTB kept the energy high. Cool, chill spacey jam out of Gumbo, really fun stuff. Fades out and then the opening to Moma kicks in. Fairly standard Moma, the jump right into a charging Piper. The get through the standard part of Piper and launch right into a ripping jam. Fishman keeps a high tempo drumbeat going while Trey plays a playful upper register melody, which then slowly transitions into a dark psychedelic meditation. Cool little Drum Solo towards the end of the jam as well. Great Piper. A relatively straightforward Theme finishes up a pretty great first set.

Jibboo is not a personal favorite, but it gets folks dancing at least. Fun NICU. Sand kicks off the jam portion of Set II, and what a jam! Following the composed section they immediately launch into a layered, textured spacey jam, with some amazing synth work by page and a lot of delays by Trey. The jam kicks in to high gear, with a cool melody developing from Trey around 16 minutes in. The epic jam finishes up with a brief return to the melody, and they Trey pulls out the acoustic for Inlaw. Mountains in the Mist continues the cooldown period from the Sand. Limb by Limb gets folks moving again. Super high energy during Golgi, crowd going wild. Pretty Slave jam, but nothing out of the ordinary, great set closer as always. The rare Horseless Silent and Heavy Things was a nice encore, but nothing special.

Overall: Pretty good show, first set may have been a bit better than the second. Piper and Sand were the highlights.
