Set I:

Jim: Nothing fancy..standard opener

PYITE: Had a nice slower than usual intro..

Bag: Has a nice little jam in it..doesn't stray away from the Bag theme though...some nice guitar work by Trey towards the end...

Fee: No microphone..good, fun tune...

SOAMule: Another fun song..Page does some nice work on the keys in this one..and worked nicely into Catapult...

Catapult: Mike having fun with this as well as Page breaking out the theremin..and back into SOAMule..

SOAMelt: Has a nice In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Trey in the beginning..gets a bit dark..has a nice pace to it throughout..some solid playing by Page can be found in this as well...

Talk: Gives the set a nice breather..some nice work by Trey on acoustic..

Taste: Still a relatively new song..which was just starting to become explored..this version is pretty tame...nice little Norwegian Wood tease by Trey..but check out the '97 ones to get a good "taste"..

Suzy: A relatively quick version but well played...how Suzy should be...Page kills it as usual..Nice choice to end the set I thought..

Set II:

CDT: Pretty straightforward..nothing out of the ordinary..

Gin: Pretty decent version..nothing too exploratory..keeps the set going in a good direction..

Rift: Standard..

Caspian: Still a relatively new song and not too explored at the time..played well though..

Ya Mar: Some nice organ work by Page..and a nice little solo by Trey..

Tweezer: Gets a nice groove going..some solid bass by Mike..and some soaring peaks by Trey which come back down very nicely...slow down jam to end it..

Fluffhead: Keeps the set going at a nice pace..nice outro playing by Trey...

Life on Mars: perfect placement..slows down the pace nicely before going into Reprise...

Tweezer Reprise: One of the best ways to encore or end a set imo...

Encore:

Possum: Pretty decent version..Some nice work by Trey before bringing it back home..in all honesty..have you ever heard a bad version?

Carolina: Standard...crowd gets really into it..

Highlights of Set II:

Ya Mar, Tweezer, Fluffhead

I'd give this show 3 out of 5 stars..

SET 1: Runaway Jim, Punch You in the Eye: Standard.

AC/DC Bag: Has a bit more juice than normal and the crowd reciprocates in kind.

Fee: Standard >

Scent of a Mule -> Catapult[1] -> Scent of a Mule: Not a mule fan at all but this is notable for Mike’s notable bellowing Catapult vocals following Page playing it on the spooky theremin.

Split Open and Melt: Has a cool In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida tease but outside of that this is a rather bland rendition.

Talk: Standard.

Taste: This from .net: “First version with a "Norwegian Wood" (the Beatles) tease, although this one did not signify the end of the jam section. In the future, much debate would ensue over the chordal riff signaling the song's conclusion - "NICU" (which this riff MOST CLEARLY RESEMBLES part of the melody of), "Norwegian Wood," and later, "What's The Use" all entering the discussion.”

My take on all of this – so I am embarrassed to say I had never thought of NICU as resembling a piece of the Taste jam, but it sure does, see 5:04. There is clearly a Norwegian Wood tease in here but you can here that in many, many versions of Taste, it’s practically a part of the ending to the jam more often than not? I sure as hell never heard any What’s the Use in this version of Taste.

Suzy Greenberg: Page showing off a bit here for his dad, nice showcase for him as he deftly switches between his instruments.

First set summary: Nothing here that I would ever revisit. Very bland. Somewhere in here Trey talks about how Page’s dad was at the show and how the band and the fans are like one big family and inviting everyone out to dinner after the show, tongue in cheek.

SET 2: Chalk Dust Torture, Bathtub Gin, Rift > Prince Caspian > Ya Mar: Standard, enjoyable listening sure – but nothing stands out at all.

Tweezer, Fluffhead: Good segment. Nothing crazy, very average versions but they certainly anchor the second set.

Life on Mars? > Tweezer Reprise. ENCORE: Possum, Carolina – All of this sounds fine to my ears. I appreciated Life on Mars? After the Tweezer, Fluff combo.

Second set summary: It’s like they were holding back for Halloween, but that isn’t really true because they threw down on 10.29. Not sure what the band’s mindset was here. But this is a tame Phish show. I would rate this as a 3.3 out of five.

I saw this show when I was 17 years old and all I really remember is that it was awesome. There were folding chairs on the floor that weren't attached to anything, so eventually they were pushed all over the place. The Runaway Jim & Scent of a Mule were awesome. The band seemed to be in a really good mood.

This show gets a lot of disrespect, and having not listened to it since, I can't really weigh in. But to be 17 and partying with friends & the best band of all time.... there was no better place to be on Earth this evening
