Review by spreaditround

spreaditround SET 1: Wilson: Place was just on fire with these opening notes. I somehow found myself way, way down front for this show. >

Frankenstein: Awesome placement, just continues the raucous nature of what would continue for these two nights in SW Ohio.

Down with Disease: Everyone was just going crazy to hear these opening notes, amazing placement. Intent is obvious from the band to reciprocate the intense energy they are receiving from the fands. I love the punchy, staccato type stuff Trey starts the jam with. I love Page’s stuff in the mid-10 and late 10’s. This whole jam never slows, never tires, or lets up, just straight up raging for all 18 minutes. Pedal DOWN. Phish just throws down in Ohio, always has.

Lifeboy: This was needed. The place could have been vaporized if they continued down the track of the first three tunes. Crowd control. This one is quite sloppy. Didn’t care then, don’t care now. >

Boogie On Reggae Woman: Page is super funky. Mike’s breakdown in the late 4’s gets everyone going nuts. Not to be undone - Page gets a solo in the mid 5’s.

Run Like an Antelope: In the late 8’s it seems Trey has intent to take this in a different direction than your typical early to mid 90’s Antelope. Very muddy and somewhat intense. A wild effect is suddenly hear at 9:15, almost sounds like a boat horn or something. Good bit of reverb in here for a moment from Trey. Very nicely peaked in the late 10’s! I like how Trey sings the Marco Esquandolas line. Spliff! Trey comes in a bit early on the Set the gearshift line. Solid Antelope here.

I Didn't Know: The place was going off in anticipation of this one, crazy energy.

SET 2: Mike's Song: Oh man, thought the roof would come off when the opening notes of Mike’s hit. Pedal to the medal up until the early 10-minute range, Trey lays back while Mike is really thumping, Trey employing some cool effects. Mike is truly owning it through the early 11’s and beyond. Heavy, heavy effects laden jam from the early 12’s and for the next three minutes. Sounds like it could be going into Hydrogen late in the 14’s but no… ->

Free: Funky and loose with a side of slop >

Waste: I am a Waste fan but not in this spot re-listening 20 years later nor at the show, felt like a breather was not necessary at this point. Trey rips the solo quite well though. The Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring tease outro is extremely cool. ->

Also Sprach Zarathustra: I am positive I came out of my shows when the opening notes rang out. And then Trey kept hitting the Jesu, JOMD tease – dude, I swear I will never forget it. So, so sick. What the hell is someone saying over the top of the jam in the 1’s? Is that Fishman? All the teases in this are just great. Well, except Stash – it is comically forced by Trey and sloppy too, lol. >

Harry Hood: Effort is there but man, this is sloppy as hell. >
All of These Dreams: Such a good tune, love Trey’s and Page’s solos.

Possum: Sounded different at the time to my ears with Trey’s new, shrill tone. Fine enough version. >

Cavern: Slop.

ENCORE: Wading in the Velvet Sea: Trey is sloppy in parts. He does have a nice, sustained piece in early and mid 6’s that is gorgeous.

Replay value/Summary: DWD & Mike’s. I may be more generous with this show than some. I had such a good time. Both DWD and Mike’s are ones that I have revisited over the years and will continue to do so. Antelope was very good as was 2001 if you can get past the Stash tease. All in all, is better than average and I would gauge it as a 3.9 out of 5.
