MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 377

Welcome to the 377th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the last of May. The winner will receive two MP3 download codes courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and dates of the two mystery clips. The clips are connected by a theme, but the theme needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess to start – if no one answers correctly in the first 24 hours, I'll post a hint. After the hint, everyone gets one more guess before Wednesday at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Hint: This week's theme is most definitely not "Theme" – in fact, these two jams were played before "Theme from the Bottom" debuted.

Answer: Pencils down! The Blog has won again! Unbelievably, for the first time ever, the Blog has defeated the MJM crew back-to-back weeks; speaking of which, no one figured out that this week's MJM featured back-to-back versions of "David Bowie": 10/12/94 and 10/18/94 (in reverse order). I never would've thought two jams from the same song played in the same state, the same week, could've stumped folks this hard, but so it goes. Come back next week when we get an easy MJM for three LivePhish codes!

Were you raised in a barn? They dont like it when people drop hints in here! Plus, there was already a "Theme" theme this month, I believe.

uctweezer Whoa is the blog actually going to take down back to back MJMs?!
, comment by HarborSeal
HarborSeal Man, I'm trying, @uctweezer. I have a guess at the theme, but I can't pin down either clip!

uctweezer I guess it's safe to say at this point that my comment last night contained a subtle hint as well regarding how these jams relate to one another...

Don’t overthink the theme - I’m positive that once someone finds one, they’ll find the other within minutes...

Unfortunately there are only minutes left until the blog wins again!

HarborSeal Ha, beaten. I came SO close--I got Fall 94 from the sound, but spent most of my time searching the monster jams of November, and somehow never hit on the early October Bowies. Well played, blog. I'll be back in two weeks to fight for my emeritus status.

lysergic Sometimes I think "why try?" for these MJMs. I've never figured out even one clip. Then there are weeks like this. I was on the trail of 1994 Bowies... but I stopped just before I got to October. I don't know whether that makes me feel better or worse, knowing that I came so close to success.

mcgrupp81 I heard the jams, knew they wreaked of Fall 94, and THESE jams had the Bowie feel IMO. I am shocked they weren't outed. I have to chuckle to myself because with these types of jams, everyone's go-to was to guess a November Bowie. Word of advice, go listen to the rager version of DWD from Ottawa 7/5/94. Hadn't heard it in years and almost forgot how sweet those Summer 94 mixes were with respect to being able to hear Mike's work.

The recordings I have for this week's jams are pristine - the types of AUDs where you realize a great AUD sounds better than a run of the mill SBD...

I remember the trading days, and almost feeling guilty for enjoying a good SBD, like I was cheating on the AUDs. My preference is to have a copy of the AUD and the SBD. Always fun to listen to a SBD copy and say; "oh, that's what was going on there" as your ear picks up on things you just can't get with an AUD. With the 20th anniversary of Big Cypress coming, I hope Phish decides to have remastered SBD copies available to the public for sale. There are many shows I'd like to get a SBD copy of and that show is a slam dunk.
