History

From the calm bastion of “The Inner Reaches of Outer” we find ourselves thrust headfirst into the aggressively named “Don’t Doubt Me”. That song title feels like someone starting a conversation by saying, “to be honest,” words that raise our hackles. But if anyone gets the benefit of my doubt, it’s Phish.

“Somebody clean that up,” the song begins. “Someone has to clean that up.” At the Halloween 2021 debut, the “Don’t Doubt Me” continues according to the official lyrics, but at the song’s second performance on 7-27-22 Fishman adds, “Cleanup on aisle six.”

By the next performance on 9-1-22, we start getting that responsive variation that surfaces in “Suzy Greenberg”. But this time, it’s petulant. “I didn’t do it,” he whines, shirking responsibility for the mess. Later, Fishman changes his voice to sound like a supervisor, and insists, “C’mon everybody, help.”

None of these interspersed lines are found in the official song lyrics. At that, they stop surfacing after these two shows (much to this author’s dismay), while the five performances as of Spring 2026 make “Don’t Doubt Me” tie “Egg in a Hole” for second most Get More Down by Sci-Fi Soldier song played after “The Howling.”

But these exclusively set II (or encore) performances clustered within two years of the song’s release give us a much clearer understanding of what “Don’t Doubt Me” and the message of Sci Fi Soldier offer us. And to be honest, those reminders are more critical than ever: we need everyone’s help if we’re going to clean up this mess.

In fact, the very premise of the Sci Fi Soldiers’ visit to Earth is that they’ve come to prevent the Howling, the destruction of Earth precipitated by humanity itself. It’s a mess here, “like a fountain of upward neck.” Someone’s got to clean it up. We’re tearing this place apart, but no one wants to take responsibility.

And what do we say of other people in the meantime? “He’s a genuine asshole!” And “nothing is changing.” Have you never left a mess for someone else to clean up? So Phish checks us. “But you’re a genuine asshole,” too.

If somebody’s got to clean that up, why shouldn’t it be me? And you? All of us! We are all responsible for making the world a better place and preventing the Howling—for keeping the world from tearing itself apart.

In the Phishbill comic book handed out in advance of the Halloween 2021 Sci-Fi Soldier performance, we meet the oracle Holy Blankenstein who connects all the dots of the Sci-Fi Soldier lore. The first words spoken by Holy Blankenstein in front of the Sci-Fi Soldiers are “Unhead the knee.”

So what does it mean, un-head the knee? Dance. Get more down. This transforms the problem into embodied action in real time. As Holy Blankenstein explains:

“These creatures keep their brains in their knees. They clear their minds with the movement of dance and handstands in grand fashion. We can learn much from them. Clear your mind.”

When we’re dancing, our minds are cleared and we cannot be angry or assholes. We don’t overthink everything. We stop tearing the world apart. Don’t doubt me—or perhaps more to the point, don’t doubt Phish. We’re all going to have to clean this mess up together.
