Jam Chart for The Squirming Coil (6 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
1990-12-28 New York, NY 8:00 A splendid full-band outro with melodic riffing that hints at the "Manteca" which fully emerges from the following -> "Tweezer".
1993-05-08 Durham, NH 10:13 Towards the end of Page's solo, Trey, and then Mike and Fish jump back in and kick off (by ->) an awesome, rocking and bluesy "Jam."
1994-10-31 Glens Falls, NY 10:05 A spectacular, transcendent end to a spectacular, transcendent show.
1997-07-05 Como, Italy 9:20 Page shines throughout this single-set, free, outdoor gig, so it arrives as a bit of a surprise that it's Trey who steals the show during the course of this patient and serene encore. To be sure, Page's play is confident and assured, but Trey's late (7:00) play is as unusual as it is welcome, his tone wavy and his phrasing pushing, but not quite breaking, the bounds of the song proper. Excellent version.
1998-12-30 New York, NY 12:50 Full-band jam in place of traditional piano outro transforms Coil from predictable (if beautiful) set piece into surprising vehicle for textural improvisation. Unlike 5/8/93, this is not an unmotivated reentry by the rest of the band, but a smooth, natural progression: Rather than step back, the rest of the band just keeps playing. (Thanks @qushner for the lovely description).
2016-09-03 Commerce City, CO 10:44 Mike's thundering basslines throughout the jam convince everyone, Page included, to leave the stage to let him finish off this beautiful and unique show-closing version.
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
Versions with a red background are in the Phish.net Hall of Fame, and reflect exceptional, legendary, and classic moments from Phish's performance history.
The jam chart team has highlighted some versions with a yellow background; these are the versions the team believes to be especially improvisational, or otherwise notable.
A purple date indicates that you were in attendance.
