Jam Chart for Energy (4 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
2013-07-21 Chicago, IL 14:25 The third appearance of "Energy" opens a rather (in)famous set and is the longest version so far. A bit of banter about the crowd sticking around in the rain finally gives way to the song. The jam begins and is a ball of frenzied, well, energy. The band locks in, Trey and Page have some great interplay. The frenzy eventually gives way to a spacey ending, replete with some of Mike's famous "bass bombs" and eventually > into "Ghost".
2013-08-04 San Francisco, CA 10:41 This version opens the second set, where the song is most commonly found. The jam stays mostly in the bounds of the song until it turns on a dime to a Fish-led jam, accented by excellent play from the rest of the band. > an excellent "Runaway Jim".
2021-10-20 Eugene, OR 12:49 Significantly more accomplished than its short 12:45 time stamp would suggest. The jam shifts at 6:00 to D in various modes, then to F bliss at 7:45. This yields a smooth and linear growth to a predictable but satisfying peak around 11 minutes in. The final minute wrangles down to quiet and introspective space.
2023-08-02 New York, NY 12:45 In from an excellent "Axilla (II)" outro, Trey orchestrates more conventional jamming, spritely soloing over Page's great piano play. A cool theme emerges after the 4:30 mark, which the band is content to explore, weaving in an array of different textures and sounds; this leads to confident, if not quite conventional improv, a fun jam that undoubtedly energizes a surprisingly musical -> and standout "Meatstick."
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
