Jam Chart for Beneath a Sea of Stars Part 1 (6 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
2019-07-09 Uncasville, CT 16:54 An absolutely stunning piece of psychedelic music, almost akin to free jazz at times, that touches on nearly every mood imaginable in Phish's improvisation and a few not imaginable in Phish's improvisation. Exceptionally deep and must-hear.
2020-02-20 Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico 13:09 Drifts out of the usual jam into a stark minor key jam at Mike's urging, builds up a thick synth-laden ambient fog like it's 1999 all over again, and then gently returns to the main theme. A good omen for the future of "Beneath a Sea of Stars Part 1"'s improvisational future.
2021-10-26 Santa Barbara, CA 13:09 > out of "Blaze On". A version worthy of the wonderful 7/9/19 "Sea of Stars", with the band building up a torrid and bilious fog on stage reminiscent of a good "Split Open and Melt" and Fishman keeping everything glued together. Very deep and powerful music.
2022-02-27 Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico 11:22 Proves once again to be a perfect match for the seaside environs with a jam that grows more spacious and then sucks the listener into a powerful maelstrom of synth waves, crashing percussion, and magnetic lead guitar.
2023-04-19 Berkeley, CA 15:12 While not "Hydrogen," the version functions similarly; what has now become familiar, airy play, a welcome transition from "Mike's" strong, driven, punch. What follows is a wonderful, psychedelic, excursion. Fish fans would do well to tune in around 6:25. What follows is remarkable as the improvisation itself transitions, Trey picking up Fish's pattern, or call for action, with the version quickly assuming darker over- and undertones.
2025-09-20 Hampton, VA 11:44 One of the more interesting (possibly?) Fish-driven jams. If interested in following a different sort of percussion rinse - a riveting (albeit subdued) amalgamation of our favorite drummer's different styles and sounds - you can do much worse. While his play belies the suggestion the improvisation is in any way aimless, what's more: A true sense, here, that Trey is creeping closer, if not to outright (lowercase) space, than certainly surrendering to the air - his tone at times incredibly surprising, masterfully matching his introspective ideas. Or: Rather different from the other versions.
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
Versions with a red background are in the Phish.net Hall of Fame, and reflect exceptional, legendary, and classic moments from Phish's performance history.
The jam chart team has highlighted some versions with a yellow background; these are the versions the team believes to be especially improvisational, or otherwise notable.
