This show marked the first known performances of Tweezer, Cavern, and Runaway Jim as well as the first known Phish performances of Sweet Adeline and Uncle Pen. Contact contained a Sailor's Hornpipe tease from Trey and If I Only Had a Brain featured Fish on trombone. A cover of James Bracken’s Steppin’ Out (which appears on Live Cream Volume II) may have been performed as the first encore tune, but this is unconfirmed.

Ah, Denison University, one of Ohio's oldest schools, this private college is nestled in beautiful Licking County and was host to Phish's first foray in the Buckeye State. The band was playing at a fraternity party celebrating the end of the intramural hockey season; Trey notes several times the "sad end to the season today" and that he loves them "like brothers". There is various stage banter to this effect in between a number of songs, and boy is this show smoking.
1990 was a year in which Phish was touring heavily, and this show's setlist features the debut of several songs that would enter regular rotation and never look back- Tweezer, Runaway Jim, and Cavern. Every song in this show is incredibly tight-the band is clearly trying to impress and they are having a good night. God knows what the frat guys were thinking during this long YEM vocal jam...this Ya Mar featured especially blissful soloing from Page and Trey and the show as a whole was comprised of above average versions.

This review goes out to the Beta Intramural Hockey Team. Sorry to be a broken record, but I think this another standard early-90's show. High on sharp and tight, low on exploration and creativity. Of course, a fun listen, but little that I found remarkable. Interesting to hear the first versions of Tweezer (fast pace, jam just dies fades without a slow down, even), Jim, and Cavern. The Melt is wonky, though, and Cavern is pretty bad (yes, I know, first version and all). On the other hand, I thought the JJLC was pretty nice, and it was funny to hear Fishman shooshing the audience during the "nice part" of Contact. Oh, and the end of the first Sweet Adeline is pretty hilariously awful, with Fish declaring "Yeah! Rock and fucking Roll!!" Would have been interesting to hear where the Whipping Post went, but it was cut. So that's about it. 5 Stars to the Beta Intramural Hockey Team: better luck next year, chaps! But three stars for the show.

Pretty good SBD source for this show. There’s a couple cassette generations in it’s lineage, but it has a nice bright sound overall. So grateful there was a taper there that night to capture this one!
The show opens up with a raging Possum. What a treat for the students in attendance at this party! Ya Mar had a few choice Trey licks. The possible debut of Tweezer was dedicated to the Beta Intramural Hockey Team whose season went down the tubes earlier that day. Solid version! It’s possible this was debuted the night before in Columbus. Uncle Pen is another first that may have debuted in Columbus. They had a week on the road from Pennsylvania to Ohio to write and polish up some new songs. There’s a tape flip after Suzy. The beginning of A-Train is cut. Nice version of A-Train tonight. The third new song, Runaway Jim, has the OG verse. Before YEM Trey makes some more comments about the Beta Intramural Hockey team. Decent version with a nice B&D section and a trippy ending to the vocal jam. GXBX wrapped up the first half.
Trey dedicates another number to the Beta Intramural Hockey Team. A blues tune of course, Funky Bitch. Solid Mike’s Groove. The second jam in Mike’s was as long as Saratoga’s version. Nice intro to Groove with some cowbell action. Different approach to the ending from what they’ve been doing lately. Jesus Left and Lizards continued the stretch of unreleased material. Fish drums out the intro to Split Open for a bit before Mike comes in. Rippin’ jam tonight. A fun Contact provides a nice cool down. Fish shushes everyone saying “this is the nice part now” before the final coda. Rift makes another appearance. They reworked the first half and slowed the pace down from what we heard in Baltimore. I love the mellow intro! They kept busy on their week off! Cavern was another new number. This version has the OG verse as well. Plus, the ending has “Penile Erector” in place of Picture of Nectar. The ending goes on a little long and it’s clear they’re still working things out here. There’s a good chance all of these new songs were played the night before in Columbus. Trey typically lets the audience know when it’s a debut. Fish takes center stage for the last song of the set. The trombone gets dusted off for this version of Brain. Trey requests a “slightly relaxed version” before Carolina. Sweet Adeline makes it’s public debut. This debut performance is “slightly relaxed”. Whipping Post cuts during the first jam, but what’s available sounds great! It’s a shame this version isn’t complete, but it’s amazing someone captured this great night of music!

First ever Runaway Jim and 1st ever Tweezer that is huge I have COME TO LEARN that Phish i wish this were not true btw but they go for it out of the gate another way to say this is they shoot their load like a 15 yr old boy virgin They always go for it right away like Boston or Cream or Eric Clapping wishing he was still IN Cream Sometimes we wish we did not get rid of that ex wife of that tool we so needed badly
I have witnessed the best ever Lonely Trip was on its debut in Hershey Park 2021 HOT CHOCOLATE !!! Made that show for me it was so beautifully serene and calm I wish I was in PA at 9:30 ish when Trey went to Halley's Comet Land 8-11-2021
I have also witnessed the only good JOY which is crazy because the song TITLE should inspire better versions or at least occasional jams but it never does but this 1st out of the gate in Camden 2009-6-7 Sugar Shack 1st or last time will always be a shit MIKE'S SONG Mike needs to get into his own and play Contusion (Songs in the Key of Life instrumental) or play Victim or Marissa or even Cathy i love Mike but he needs to assert himself Ok yes Ya Mar always needs to also be played but also not a Phish or Mike Leo Kottke Original I get why Phish is stagnating in waters that do not have current I will tell you the current has NOTHING to do w GHOSTS or SOULS but it has a million percent to deal W the SPIRIT of us all SPIRIT talk about spirit in 2023 and maybe we will listen and you will not be pissing in our ears w the devil satan's satanic lies of confusion and mexican spirits from tequila land Why must you shoot your load best the first time like a 10 year old boy looking at penthouse and playboy long before the internet just saying read a better book or better yet 66 real TRUE books of SPIRIT LIFE like Jeff Holdsworth he knew how to hold on to what was worth holding onto just saying trey you idiot for such a wise guy you have no wisdom and for so many notes and speeches about Gamehendge you say nothing about the New Earth or real life not the matrix lies from Satan i wanna talk about TRUTH and the WAY and LIFE ETERNAL but all Phish wants to talk about is drugs and Gamehendge and bullshit lies from Garcia's brain full of lies
