i suppose july 4 is considered the more "sexy" pick out of the two atlanta shows, but i actually prefer this show more (not that 7/4 was anything to sneeze about!). the tone was set immediately with a hell-raising version of "chalkdust", complete with top-shelf intensity in the jamming. the versions of "gumbo" & "tube" were sublime, and the jamming in "taste" hit my head like a battering ram. the second set rawked things out with "piper", "antelope", and a funky "moma dance", as well as lightening the mood with "contact" and fishman's "drummer boy" antics. the encore continued things in a light mood, and i was content enough leaving on that note....but then the boys came out for a second encore & meant business this time with "harry hood", which without a doubt was the icing on the cake. maybe i'm in the minority, but the 7/3 show gets the nod by me.....

I usually don't delve too far into pre-show specifics, but on this, the 19th anniversary of my 12th show, I thought I'd indulge myself.

And since we're entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we've distributed over $2 million to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.

The vibe at the hotel was amazing. Ususal heady and kind people, I was wearing my Mets hat as usual and even the Braves Phans were nice to me. This was one of many times seeing Mike on the lot in a golf cart.
If you're a fan of Meatstick this is the US debut. Also the debut of Mountains, we caught this a few days later in NJ again too.
The band was really enjoying themselves, you can hear it listening back to the audio. Fish's rendition of drummer boy...the band was just themselves and wacky and we left that night knowing the 4th was going to be an even better show.
