Carter Beauford is best known as the drummer for The Dave Matthews Band. The whole band joined Phish on-stage in Winston-Salem for an inspired “All Along the Watchtower” encore on 4/21/94. Beauford began the festivities by engaging in an interesting drum jam with Fishman before “Watchtower” began. Similarly, he appeared with Fishman in a drum jam that led into the debut of “The Maker” on October 15 of the same year. Carter is an accomplished musician in his own right. He has also released an instructional video called “Under the Table and Drumming.” Interestingly, his involvement in the DMB might not have occurred had he been awarded the job he had auditioned for earlier – drummer in the house band on Arsenio Hall’s late-night television show.
